New Disease Syndrome (CANDLE) Resemble the Malignant Cells

SYNDROMalmost daily fever, skin lesions and stunting. Here are some of the symptoms of an unknown disease that begins during the first six months of life and gets worse during childhood. Turret Antonio Fernandez, Chief of Section of Dermatology, Hospital Niño Jesús de Madrid, addresses two of only five that have been found affected in the world for now.

The first patient he saw in his office was a child of two years derived from other Spanish hospitals. He had “fever and anathematise patches on the skin, mainly on the trunk, but also affecting the eyelids and face.” The lesions appeared and disappeared in the form of outbreaks. Over time, many became a kind of bruising. “This child had multiple diagnoses. One of them, lymphoma, but did not really know what was wrong,” says Dr. Fernandez turret.

After a while, “saw another boy of nine years with the same symptoms.” He had also been seen in various hospitals in the country and had several diagnoses, including leukemia. “This is because injuries of this new disease syndrome (CANDLE) resemble the malignant cells. However, this is not a cancerous tumor process,” argues the specialist.

“I was presenting these two cases by different conferences around the world until one of them a Chicago dermatologist told me I had two sisters patients with the same symptoms.” Between the two doctors have performed a descriptive summary of the dermatological disease based on the four cases identified and have given a name: Candle syndrome (for its acronym in English), or chronic atypical necrophiliac dermatitis with lipodystrophy and elevated temperature
